What is chess?

Chess is a two-player board game that is thought to have originated in northern India in the 6th century. The game is played on a board with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid, and each player controls 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which is accomplished by attacking it with one of your pieces so that it cannot move.
